- Nwoye says the intimidation of his supporters during the polls worried him a lot
- The APC candidate is confident he could win the election
- He also scored INEC an average mark for its level of preparation and the conduct of the polls
Tony Nwoye, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has claimed that there was a clampdown on the chieftains and supporters of the party by security operatives.
Nwoye alleged to Legit.ng correspondent and others journalists shortly after casting his vote at Ofianta Polling Unit 002 in Nsugbe, Anambra East Local Government Area that the police officials colluded with ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to compromise the exercise.
He said: “The report I am getting indicates that INEC are trying their best, but I can only score them average.
“But the most worrisome is the attitude of the police in Anambra state. They subjected themselves to be used as a tool of oppression and suppression of the people.
“APGA people have been using them to suppress my supporters. I wonder the interest of the Nigeria police and the military, especially the police.
“You know before the election, Governor Obiano started crying wolf that the Nigeria police has withdrawn his orderly and co, that was a subterfuge, a ploy, for him to use police to unleash them,
“But upon the whole thing, the intimidation, harassment and oppression, I believe we are going to win. If God says we will win, we'll win.”
Asked if his comment is geared towards questioning the credibility of the election, Nwoye said: “That does not stop me, but I have to bare my mind. Even when the former president Jonathan was against me four years ago when he was supporting APGA, the Nigeria police or military were not harassing and intimidating my people like this.
“But this one, they were arresting them for no just cause in polling booths, beating them up. They are supposed to be independent umpires”
He disagreed with those who say there was voter apathy in the election, saying the reports he got shows that people are turning up to vote in their various polling units.
He scored Independent National Electoral Commission average for the preparation and conduct of the election while remaining optimistic of winning the election.
“So far, I score INEC 50% but I expect improvement in the areas there are hitches. I am optimistic that APC will win the election at the end of the day.”
Earlier, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the APC of distributing cooked rice in the ongoing Anambra governorship election in the state.
The PDP made this accusation in two separate tweets on their official twitter page.
Legit.ng reports that the APC's candidate for the election is Tony Nwoye while Henry Oseloka Obaze is contesting on the platform of the PDP.
