My successor will not inherit Boko Haram, IDP camps - Shettima

- Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state has expressed his greatest wish for his successor

- He, however, inaugurated committees with the mandate of cleaning up rebuilt communities and resettling of over two million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state on Wednesday, September 27, in Maiduguri pledged that his successor will not inherit the Boko Haram crisis and resulting internally displaced persons (IDPs) phenomenon.

Governor Shettima said he was unlucky that he inherited the twin problems in 2011 and he wished that the problems would have been eradicated by the time he was through with his tenure.

Daily Trust also reports that the governor made this known while inaugurating committees with the mandate of cleaning up rebuilt communities and resettling of over two million internally displaced persons.

According to Guardian, the inauguration took place at the Government House in Maiduguri with terms of reference that included verification and registration of all returning IDPs, issuance of ID cards to them and numbering of permanent shelters.

Shettima said: ''As governor of Borno state, my greatest wish is that whoever succeeds me does not inherit the Boko Haram crisis and does not inherit the existence of IDP camps in Borno state.

''May Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala grant our administration this noble wish. ‎Our gathering today is in furthering of our progressive work towards resettling IDPs in liberated and rebuilt communities.''

Abiodun Banire, the public information officer at the UN office, Abuja, explained that 1.7 million IDPs had been displaced in the eight-year insurgency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states in the northeast alone.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that a Non Government Organization (NGO) on Sunday, September 23, in Maiduguri staged a peaceful demonstration demanding the return of IDPs to their respective communities in Bama.
