Amidst Igbo quit notice drama, Senate to debate and pass motion on National Unity

- Senate will be debating and passing a motion on national unity

- The motion was sponsored by all 108 Senators in Nigeria

- The motion was raised as a result of the quit notice issued to Igbos resident in the North

Amidst the uproar generated by the quit notice issued to Igbos by some Arewa youths, the Nigerian 8th Senate is set to debate and pass a motion on national unity.

The motion which was reportedly sponsored by all 108 Nigerian senators, is aimed at addressing the issues that have led to the calls by some people for the disintegration of Nigeria.

Below is the Senate's motion:

- States that the greatest challenge that Nigeria is facing is the threat to national unity

- Observes that Nigeria's effort at achieving national integration have largely remained unrealized

- Reiterates that the amalgamation of Nigeria is not a mistake

- Urges all Nigerians to desist from actions and utterances that may threaten the stability of the nation

- Urges senators to intensify their representatives role by embarking on sensitization campaign in their various constituencies to highlight the importance of harmonious living and peaceful co-existence in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has fulfilled his promise to meet with leaders of the north as part of his move to reconcile the region and the south east.

A quit notice issued by some northern youths to Igbos in the north sparked public outrage stirring condemnation and hate speech that threatened the unity of the country.

The acting president on Tuesday, June 13, promised to meet with leaders from both regions, he flagged it off with a meeting with leaders from the north. gathered that Osinbajo is also expected to meet with leaders of the south east separately before having a joint session with them.
