Fatim Jawara, the goalkeeper of Gambian women’s senior national football team, has died while attempting to cross to Europe by boat.

According to Gambia News, Jawara met her sudden death after she attempted cross to Europe through Libya, where she is said to have spent weeks in a secluded camp in Misrata.

This was disclosed by an agent, who she paid to facilitate her move. The agent confirmed that Jawara died last week Thursday, October 27.

Her death as left the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) in total as she was among a plethora of African migrants daring the high waves in a bid to reach Lampedusa, south of Italy.

Before her death, Jawara was part of the Gambian team that made history, putting the country's name on the map in the women's U-17 World Cup in Azerbaijan in 2012.

She was goalkeeper to erstwhile Women's First Division champions Red Scorpions and starred in Gambia's thrashing of a visiting Scottish side female side Glasgow Girls FC months ago.
