BREAKING: Bomb blast rocks Maiduguri in Borno state

There has been a bomb blast in Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

The blast occurred around Muna Garage in Jere local government area of the city this morning Wednesday, October 12.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the blast on its official Twitter handle.

NEMA has confirmed that not fewer than eight people have lost their lives in the blast at the car garage and several others injured. The injured have been taken to the hospital, it said.

Police statement said five people were inside the taxi in a convoy to Gamboru, a town near the Cameroon border when the explosion occurred.

"We evacuated eight dead bodies and about 20 other injured persons," Reuters quoted a rescue worker as saying but said a hospital official put the number of wounded at ten.

The bomb blast in Jere local government follows attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on a village Kwashebe in the area on Tuesday, October 11 which left at least five people dead.

The military also reported that it killed two Boko Haram terrorists and injured several in another part of the local government on Tuesday as well.

According to a statement by the acting Army public relations officer Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, the army killed the terrorists while on clearance patrol in Ladin Buta and Juwano villages in Jere local government area of the state on Tuesday, October 11.

The army seized sophisticated weapons and ammunition from the terrorists after the gunfight that led to the death of two of the terrorists.

The statement read: “Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE on clearance patrol around Ladin Buta and Juwano villages in Jere Local Government Area of Borno state came in contact with some remnants of Boko Haram terrorists hibernating in the area around 11.00am today (Tuesday) morning.

“The troops engaged the group which was believed to be terrorizing the residents through wanton killings, kidnappings and armed robberies.

“During the exchange of fire, 2 Boko Haram terrorists were gunned down by the troops, while some escaped with gunshot wounds. The patrol team also recovered 2 AK-47 rifles with magazine, 2 fabricated 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, 2 Mobile Telephone Handsets and a Torchlight from the terrorists.”
